Brittle Paper lists Logos Open Culture’s forthcoming book publication ‘Madonna is our mother’: Notes from Malawi as one of the most anticipated African books in 2023.

‘Madonna is our mother’: Notes from Malawi, by author and academic Muti Michael Phoya, will be launched next month in Lilongwe.

In this collection of essays, Muti reflects on the shifting character of postcolonial Malawi. It focuses mainly on the land and memory, the book paints a nuanced picture of a modern African country through its fascinating history.

Being added to the list by Brittle Paper for ‘Madonna is our mother’: Notes from Malawi is a great acknowledgement of one of the most exciting books to be published in Malawi this year.

About the author

Muti, the author, has engaged with Malawi’s story since 2000. He has authored several books of fiction and non-fiction, including the best-selling ‘Malawi, Lake of Stars’. He has also contributed to the Society of Malawi Journal, and the influential pan-African blog, Africa is a Country. He won the Peer Gynt literary award in 2005 and was the Goethe-Institut Moving Africa scholar in 2011.
