Lerato Honde on her art and the legacy of Rose Chibambo

Cover artwork by Lerato Honde for Lomathinda: Rose Chibambo Speaks

Malawian artist Lerato Honde speaks about freeing Rose Chibambo from the 200 Kwacha banknote. Honde is the artist behind the cover of forthcoming publication from Logos Open Culture, Lomathinda: Rose Chibambo Speaks.

During the process to create a cover befitting Chibambo’s legacy, Honde was artist-in-residence with Logos Open Culture.

In the film about her time as artist-in-residence, Honde explains

With the cover, I’m just exploring how different Malawian females can see themselves in Rose, see themselves as strong, independent women without having to rely traditionally on men, or having to rely on some sort of foreign kind of aim. I feel like Malawian females in themselves, in their identities, can also be just as powerful.
